SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated by Southern Conference foe College of Charleston, 6-1, Friday afternoon in the Terriers final home match at the Reeves Tennis Center this season.
Wofford falls to 5-15 on the year and 1-8 in the Southern Conference, while the Cougars improve to 16-8 and 8-1 in conference play. Before the match, Wofford honored seniors Guinn Garcia and Lucy Schermerhorn for their commitment to the tennis program over the past four years.
On the doubles side, Charleston swept all three matches to clinch the doubles point. First, Kelly Kambourelis and Jenny Falcone defeated Terrier pair Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist, 8-3, in the No. 1 match-up. Next at No. 3, Irene Viana and Olivia McMillan outfought Wofford’s Guinn Garcia and Mareli Sanchez in a tight match, 8-6. Then, Christin Newman and Samantha Maddox topped Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn 8-4 in the No. 2 spot.
In singles action, the Cougars won the first three matches to secure the overall victory. First, Falcone beat Garcia (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 4 position. Next in the No. 6 match-up, Katherine Schofield bested Schermerhorn (6-1, 6-2). Then, Brooke McAims topped past Paulson (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 3 spot to clinch the result for Charleston.
The Terriers would get a point back after Audrey Coventry held on to defeat Kambourelis in a third set super tie-break (6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-6)) at the No. 2 position. The Cougars then wrapped up the 6-1 win after victories by Maddox over Sanchez (6-2, 7-5) in the No. 5 spot and Newman over Evans (6-1, 6-3) at No. 1.
The Terriers wrap up the regular season tomorrow when they travel to Boone, N.C. to face the Mountaineers of Appalachian State. This match was originally scheduled for March 30, but had to be postponed due to poor conditions. Match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
