Women’s Tennis Defeated at Appalachian State 6-1

BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated on the road at Appalachian State, 6-1, in the Terriers final regular season match.  Wofford falls to 5-16 overall and 1-9 in the Southern Conference, while the Mountaineers improve to 14-8 and 6-4 in conference play.
 
On the doubles side, Appalachian State clinched the point after victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.  First at No. 1, Ellie Linsell and Clare Cox topped Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn, 8-2.  Then, Brianna Armellino and Mackenzie LaSure beat Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist in a tight match, 8-6.  In the No. 3 spot, Wofford’s Guinn Garcia and Mareli Sanchez defeated Jennifer Ansari and Gabriela Celi, 8-4.
 
In singles action, the Mountaineers won four match-ups in straight sets to secure the victory.  First, Evans fell to Linsell (7-5, 6-1) at the No. 1 position.  Next, Ansari defeated Garcia (6-3, 6-0) in the No. 4 spot.  Then, Jessica Thaggard outfought Sanchez in a tight first set to win the No. 5 match-up (7-5, 6-1).  At No. 6, Celi topped Schermerhorn (6-3, 6-3). 
 
Wofford got a point back after Paulson battled past Armellino (7-5, 6-4) in the No. 3 spot.  Then in the day’s final match, Audrey Coventry and Cox fought to a third set super tie-break at the No. 2 position.  Cox won the first set 6-3, but Coventry responded to win the second in a tie-break (7-6).  In the third set, Cox outlasted Coventry to win the tie-break 10-4 and the claim the victory for the Mountaineers.
 
Wofford will return to the court Thursday, April 18, when they travel to Elon, N.C. to compete in the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament.  The Terriers will face off against Georgia Southern at 1:00 p.m. at the Burlington Tennis Center.
