BURLINGTON, N.C. – Wofford was eliminated by Georgia Southern 4-2 in the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C.
In doubles action, the Eagles won the first two match-ups to secure the point. First, Stephanie Woods and Natalie Maffett topped Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn 8-3 at the No. 2 position. Then, Paola Garrido and Mary Phillips Smith defeated Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist 8-4 in the top spot. The final match-up between Wofford’s Guinn Garcia and Mareli Sanchez against Georgia Southern’s Jordana Klein and Caitlin Kitchen went unfinished but the Eagles were leading 5-4.
On the singles side, the Terriers tied the score after a quick straight set victory by Paulson over Woods (6-2, 6-0) in the No. 3 position. Then, Schermerhorn defeated Francisca Norregaard in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) to give Wofford a 2-1 lead.
However, the lead would be short lived as Georgia Southern won the next three match-ups to clinch the overall victory. First, Smith outfought Garcia (6-4, 6-3) in the No. 4 spot. Next, Garrido edged past Evans in first set tie-break (7-6 (7-4)), then Garrido secured the point with a 6-1 win in set two at No 1. Lastly, Klein came from behind to beat Audrey Coventry in three sets at the No. 2 position. Coventry won the first set in a tie-break (7-6 (7-3)), but Klein responded in the second with a 6-2 win. In the final set, Klein bested Coventry 6-3 to win the match and advance the Eagles to the second round.
The day’s final match was at the No. 5 spot between Maffett and Sanchez. They split the first two sets, 7-6 to Sanchez and 6-4 to Maffett. Sanchez held a 6-5 advantage in the final set, but the match would go unfinished.
The Terriers finish the season 5-17 and 1-9 in Southern Conference play. Georgia Southern improves to 10-11 and will face the number two seed, Elon Phoenix, Friday.
