DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated on the road at Davidson 4-3 Tuesday afternoon. The Terriers drop to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in Southern Conference play, while the Wildcats improve to 8-8 on the year and 1-6 in conference play.
On the doubles side, Davidson won the No. 1 and No. 2 match-ups to clinch the point. First at No. 1, Wildcat pair Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer defeated Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist 8-4. Then, Stephani Synn and Nisha Crouser squeaked past Wofford’s Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn 8-6 in a tight match at the No. 2 spot. Terriers Mareli Sanchez and Guinn Garcia topped Frizzi Bschorer and Blake Nickles 8-4 in the No. 3 position.
In singles action, Davidson extended their lead to 3-0 after two straight set wins. First, Crouser defeated Sanchez (6-2, 6-1) in the No. 4 spot. Then, Synn beat Paulson (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 3 position. Wofford won the next two matches to pull within one. At No. 6, Schermerhorn bested Bschorer in two quick sets (6-3, 6-2). Next, Lindqvist topped Tamara Hill in a close second set to secure her win (6-3, 7-5) in the No. 5 position.
The Wildcats clinched the match after Brites Moniz-Soares defeated Evans (7-5, 6-1) at the No. 1 spot. In the day’s final match, Wofford’s Audrey Coventry outlasted Cummer in a marathon third set (6-3, 6-7, 11-9) in the No. 2 position.
The Terriers return to the court on Saturday, April 6, when they host the Elon Phoenix. The match is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
