SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team fell to Samford, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers drop to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in Southern Conference action, while the Bulldogs improve to 11-7 on the year and 6-1 in conference.
In doubles action, Samford won the No. 2 and No. 3 match-ups to claim the doubles point. First, Fares Kilani and Alex Sajonz topped David Sklar and Parks Thompson 8-4 in the No. 3 spot. Then, Walker Heffron and Tom Wood were defeated Elliot Barnwell and Austin Akers 8-5 at the No. 2 position. In the top spot, Rob Galloway and Jackson Keith upset #72 ranked Zac Dunkle and Garrison Laduca 8-6.
On the singles side, the Bulldogs swept all six match-ups to secure the victory. First, Sajonz cruised past Heffron (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 4 position. Next at the No. 5 spot, Wood fell to Akers (6-3, 6-3). Then, Barnwell battled past Drew Superstein (6-3, 6-4) at No. 2. Kilani and Keith battled to a third set in the No. 3 spot, but Kilani pulled away for the win (2-6, 6-1, 6-1). At the No. 6 position, Sklar fell to Laduca in a very tight match (6-4, 7-5). The day’s final match-up between #112 ranked Dunkle and Galloway went to a third set super tie-break. Galloway won the first set 6-2, but Dunkle game back to claim the second 7-5. In the tie-break, both players had multiple match points but neither were able to capitalize until the score was tied 13-13. Then, Dunkle was able to win the next two points to secure the win, 15-13.
The Terriers will return to action on Wednesday, April 10, when they host the Furman Paladins. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
