SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated by Elon, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers fall to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in Southern Conference play, while the Phoenix improve to 16-3 and 6-2 in conference.
On the doubles side, Elon swept all three matches to claim the point. At the No. 1 spot, Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist fell to Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker 8-4. Next, Briana Berne and Taylor Casey defeated Guinn Garcia and Mareli Sanchez 8-3 in the No. 3 position. Then at No. 2, Maria Camara Ruiz and Viviana Stavreva topped Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn 8-5.
In singles action, the Phoenix won the first three matches in straight sets to secure the victory. First, Lazarova beat Garcia (6-0, 6-2) in the No. 5 position. Next at the No. 4 spot, Bryn Khoury defeated Sanchez (6-4, 6-1). Then, Jansaker clinched the match after her win over Audrey Coventry (6-3, 6-2) at No. 2.
The day’s final three matches all went to a third set super tie-break. In the No. 6 position, Schermerhorn overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set to win set two 6-4. Then in the third set tie-break, Schermerhorn came from behind to secure win (12-10) over Camara Ruiz. Next, Paulson defeated Stavreva in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5)). In the days final match-up, Evans and Johnston battled to a third set super tie-break. Johnston won the first set 6-3, but Evans responded to win the second 6-4. In the tie-break, Johnston bested Evans (10-7) to claim the day’s final point.
The Terriers return to the court tomorrow, April 7, when they host the Spartans of UNCG. The match is part of USTA’s Campus Kids’ Day program. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
