SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated at home by UNCG, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers fall to 5-14 on the season and 1-7 in conference play. The Spartans are now 12-6 and 8-2 in the SoCon.
On the doubles side, UNCG swept all three match-ups to clinch the doubles point. First, Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead topped Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist, 8-1, in the No. 1 position. Next, Stephanie Falcon and Dilara Yurtkuran fought past Guinn Garcia and Mareli Sanchez, 8-6, at No. 3. In the No. 2 match, Wofford’s Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn battled Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie into a tie-break, but the Spartan pair squeaked by with an 8-7 (9-7) win.
In singles action, UNCG won the first five matches to secure the team victory. First, Gammie defeated Schermerhorn (6-4, 6-2) at the No. 6 spot. Then, Falcon beat Lindqvist (6-0, 6-4) in the No. 5 position. At No. 4, Rios topped Sanchez (6-4, 6-2) to secure the result. Then, Wilkins bested Evans (6-2, 6-2) in the No. 1 spot, followed by Yurtkuran victory over Audrey Coventry (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 2 position.
Paulson earned Wofford’s only point with her three set come from behind victory over Whitehead. Whitehead jumped in front early with a 6-1 win in set one, but Paulson stormed back to even with a 6-1 win of her own in set two. Then in the final set, Paulson maintained her momentum in route to 6-2 win.
The Terriers will return to the court Friday, April 12, for their final home match of the season against the College of Charleston. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. Before the match Wofford will honor seniors Guinn Garcia and Lucy Schermerhorn.
