SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team lost to Coastal Carolina, 2-0 Friday evening in their home opener at Snyder Field. The Terriers fall to 0-2-1 overall, while the Chanticleers improve to 1-1-1 on the season.
In the first half, Coastal Carolina got off to an early start in the 16th minute when junior defender Rylie Johnson scored on a header off of midfielder Camille Christie's corner kick to make the score 1-0. The Chanticleers extended their lead 2-0 when freshman forward Brianna Panico scored with a shot with outside of her foot just outside the 18 yard box that flew into the roof of the net in the 28th minute. Sophomore midfielder Darbie Kelley was credited with the assist. The Terriers' best opportunity came in the 39th minute when sophomore midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode's free kick from 23 yards out just sailed over the goal.
In the second half, the Terriers had an opportunity to get back into the game when sophomore forward Chloe Brackett had a shot just outside the 18 yard box that was heading into the lower left corner of the goal in the 62nd minute. Chanticleer goalkeeper Megan Spencer was forced to make a big save to keep the score at 2-0. Both teams battled back and forth, but no one was able to get onto the score sheet in the final minutes of the game.
For the Terriers, senior goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn played the first half and suffered her first loss of the season, facing a total of seven Coastal Carolina shots and made two saves. Junior goalkeeper Kara Boggs played the second 45 minute period facing five shots and made three saves. For the Chanticleers, Spencer earned her first win and second shutout of the season. She faced nine Terrier shots and made three saves.
In the match, Coastal Carolina won the battle in shots 12-9, and outcornered Wofford 8-3.
Wofford will return to action on Sunday, September 1st when they host University of North Carolina Asheville for the second game of their opening weekend at Snyder Field. The game will kick-off at 2:00 pm.
