ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season as they defeated Winthrop University, 4-3, on Thursday evening at the Memorial Tennis Courts.
With the victory, the Terriers improve to 1-1 overall while the Eagles fall to 0-1 overall with the loss.
Wofford gained the early 1-0 advantage after winning a hard fought point in doubles. Winthrop took the lead first as they won the No. 2 doubles matchup 6-1. Wofford then rallied to win the point earning victories in the final two doubles matches.
The No. 3 pair of sophomore David Sklar and freshman Trevor Gotkowski defeated Juan Pablo Boada and Steven Patrick 6-4 to tie up doubles at 1-1. Then No. 1 doubles pair junior Rob Galloway and freshman Haris Poric defeated Peter Nogovnak and Corey Decandia 6-4 earning the Terriers the doubles point.
In singles play, the Terriers earned three points to earn the 4-3 victory. After the Eagles gained two points winning the first two singles matches, No. 6 singles player sophomore Parks Thompson earned the first point for Wofford defeating Decandia 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
After Winthrop extended its lead with a victory in the No. 1 singles match, the Terriers would win two-straight singles matches to win the match. The comeback began with a victory by the No. 4 singles player junior Walker Heffron who defeated Mitchell 6-3, 5-6, 6-3. The final point was then earned by No. 2 singles player Poric, who defeated Patrick 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Head coach Rod Ray was extremely pleased with the way his team fought and earned a win against a good Winthrop team. "They had a great team and it was a hard fought match on both sides," said Ray. "The players had to play through some unbelievably tough conditions, but they won the doubles point and earned the win winning three out of the six singles matches."
The Terriers return to action on Sunday, January 26, when they host Mercer University for their home opener at the John E. Reeves Tennis Courts. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
