CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Trevor Gotkowski clinched the match at the No. 4 singles match as the Wofford Terriers defeated The Citadel, 4-0, Wednesday in the first round of the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club.
Wofford improves to 9-12 overall with the win and The Citadel finishes its season 2-29 overall.
The Terriers used a strong performance from the bottom of their singles lineup and a win in doubles to defeat the No. 10-seeded Bulldogs.
Wofford secured the doubles point to take the early 1-0 advantage. Jackson Keith and David Sklar topped Oliver Dedding and Grady, 8-1 at No. 3, while Thompson and Walker Heffron knocked off Peter Bleach and Jackson Pride, 8-4 at No. 2.
Parks Thompson started off singles giving the Terriers at 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Connor Grady at No. 6. Keith pushed Wofford ahead, 3-0 minutes later with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pride at the No. 5 position.
Gotkowski clinched the match for Wofford with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Dedding at No. 4 singles. The match victory for Wofford was it's first in the Southern Conference tournament since 2008.
The Terriers advance to face second-seeded Furman in Thursday's quarterfinals that will begin at 10:30 a.m. It will be Wofford's first quarterfinals appearance since 2009.
