CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – With the match tied 3-3, No. 4 singles player Catherine Martin, trailing 4-2 in the third set against Sarah Stein, came from behind to clinch the match and complete the Terriers' four-point comeback as the ninth-seeded Wofford women's tennis team rallied to defeat the eighth-seeded Davidson Wildcats, 4-3, in a thrilling come from behind victory in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Champions Club.
The Terriers improve to 6-15 overall with the win and advance to the quarterfinals where they will face the top-seeded Furman Paladins. The Wildcats finish their season 7-18 overall with the loss. The victory was Wofford's first Southern Conference Tournament win since 2007, which was the last time the Terriers made an appearance in the tournament quarterfinals.
Davidson took the doubles point and an early 1-0 advantage. The Wildcats earned an 8-2 win from Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer at No. 1 doubles and an 8-4 victory from Jenna Brunner and Nisha Crouser at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point.
At the start of singles play, Moniz-Soares extended Davidson's lead as she topped Wofford's Sarah Evans in straight sets at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, before Tamara Hill defeated Taylor Carlson, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 6 position to make it 3-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
Even though the match seemed in doubt, the Terriers began their amazing comeback. Julia Paulson put the Terriers on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Crouser on the third court before teammate Audrey Coventry pulled off a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Cummer at the No. 2 match to push the score to 3-2. Kalli Karas knotted things up on the fifth court with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Brunner to set up the clinching match at the No. 4 match.
Martin found herself in a hole against Stein and seemed as though she had lost momentum after winning the first set 6-1, but dropping the second 2-6. Trailing 4-2 in the third set, Martin mounted a ferocious comeback defeating Stein 6-4 in the final set to complete Wofford's victory over the Wildcats.
The Terriers will face the No. 1-seeded Furman Paladins tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
