Box Score Game Box (pdf)GREENVILLE, S.C. – In the first game of a three-game series, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 6-5 by Furman on Thursday night at Latham Stadium. The Terriers led 1-0 after four innings, but the Paladins plated two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 6-1 advantage. Wofford pulled to 6-5 after three runs in the eighth, but were unable score in the ninth.
Wofford is 20-18 on the season and 3-10 in the Southern Conference. Furman is 14-23 overall and 5-8 in league play. The Terriers were led by James Plaisted with three hits and two RBIs, while Seth Neely and Josh Hyman each had two hits. Andrew MacLatchie led the Paladins with two hits and four RBIs.
Both teams were retired in order in the first inning. In the top of the second, Conor Clancey, James Plaisted and Josh Hyman loaded the bases with three straight singles. A fielder's choice by Luke Feisal scored Clancey for a 1-0 lead. The Paladins had a hit in the bottom of the second, but a double play ended the inning. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the third, Furman left one runner on base in the bottom half of the third inning.
In the fourth inning both teams were retired in order. Furman added a single in the bottom of the fifth and took a 2-1 lead on a two-out homer by Andrew MacLatchie. The Paladins left two runners on base at the end of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Alec Paradowski walked and Seth Neely singled but both were left on base. The Paladins added a run on an RBI double by Carter Grote in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at second and third, an RBI single by Jordan Simpson pushed the lead to 4-1. Furman had runners at the corners when a double down the left field line drove in two more runs for a 6-1 advantage after six innings.
James Plaisted led off the seventh inning with a double down the left field line. Josh Hyman followed with a double that scored Plaisted to make it a 6-2 game. Furman was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Seth Neely hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 6-3. Conor Clancey was hit by a pitch and James Plaisted then blasted a shot over the fence in left center to make it a 6-5 game.
Furman had one runner reach base in the bottom of the eighth inning, but was caught stealing second. In the top of the ninth, Luke Feisal led off with a walk. With one out, a ground out and caught stealing ended the game.
Wofford pitcher Luke Leftwich (3-4) went 5.1 innings and allowed six runs on eleven hits with three strikeouts. Jacob Condra-Bogan threw two innings and did not allow a hit with three strikeouts. Will Stillman went two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout.
Furman starting pitcher Matt Solter (1-4) threw 7.0 innings with two runs allowed on six hits and nine strikeouts. Brant Masters went 0.2 innings and gave up three runs on two hits. Alex Abrams earned the save by going the final 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
The Terriers continue the series at Furman on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
