Baseball Drops 5-1 Decision At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Friday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 5-1 by Furman at Latham Stadium.  The Paladins scored in the first inning to take the lead and kept the Terriers off the scoreboard until the ninth inning. The final three innings were played in a steady cold rain.
 
Wofford is 20-19 on the season and 3-11 in the Southern Conference. Furman is 15-23 overall and 6-8 in league play. The Terriers had ten hits, but left nine runners on base and hit into three double plays. Matt Ramsay led the team with three hits, while Demetrius Jennings had the lone RBI. Alex Abrams had three hits to lead the Paladins.
 
Eric Brenk led off the game with a single, but was out at second attempting to advance on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the first, Hunter Burton walked and stole second, then scored on a single by Alex Abrams for a 1-0 lead. Wofford had one runner reach base in the second, but a double play ended the top half of the frame. Furman was retired in order in the bottom of the second.
 
In the top of the third, Matt Ramsay led off with a double and Derek Hirsch followed with a single. A double play and ground out ended the scoring chance. The Paladins added a single in the bottom of the third, but left the runner on base. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fourth, Furman had a single and the runner advanced on an error. A double by Jake Jones drove in a run for a 2-0 lead. A single, along with a fielding error, allowed another run to score for a 3-0 game after four innings.
 
Wofford led off the fifth inning with a walk to James Plaisted. Matt Ramsay hit a single and moved to second on an error to give the Terriers runners at second and third with one out. A pop fly and ground out ended the scoring chance. Furman left one runner on base in the bottom of the fifth.
 
To open the sixth inning, Eric Brenk singled and Alec Paradowski walked. A double steal advanced the runners, but a strikeout and fly ball stranded the runners. Furman had runners on the corners after a hit by pitch and a single in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Heath Burton drove in a run for a 4-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Matt Ramsay and Matt Kaskow had singles. A double steal moved the runners to second and third with two outs, but a ground out ended the scoring chance.
 
The Paladins led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, but the runner was picked off. A walk and a double gave Furman runners in scoring position with one out. A fielder's choice resulting in a runner out at home, but an RBI single from Jordan Simpson made it a 5-0 lead. Wofford opened the eighth inning with a walk and a single, but a double play ended the top half of the frame. Furman was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth. The Terriers led off the ninth with a single by Josh Hyman. With two outs, a single by Demetrius Jennings drove in a run to make it a 5-1 game before a fly ball ended the contest.
 
Wofford pitcher Jesse Morris (6-5) went 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Connor Foltyn went a third of an inning. Chris Sheehan gave up two hits and a run in a third of an inning. Spencer Kulman threw 1.2 innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
 
Furman starting pitcher Jacques de Gruy (1-4) threw a career-high 6.2 innings and did not allow a run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Elliott Warford earned the save by going 2.1 innings with one run allowed on three hits and one strikeout.
 
The Terriers conclude the series at Furman on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., which has been pushed back due to rain.
