Box Score (.pdf)SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team fell to the No. 64-ranked Furman University Paladins, 7-0, in Southern Conference play at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 5-12 overall and 1-6 in Southern Conference, while the Paladins improve to 13-5 overall and remain undefeated at 6-0 in conference play.
Furman swept the doubles point to jump ahead for a 1-0 lead. Blair Martin and Ansley Speaks won 8-2 on the top court to clinch the point for the Paladins.
In singles play, Speaks clinched the match for Furman winning at the No. 1 position in a hard fought point-for-point match against Wofford's Sarah Evans, 6-2, 6-1.
Although the match was already decided, Audrey Coventry battled well at the No. 2 singles position against Katherine Oudin. Coventry took the first set 7-6 (7-1), but Oudin won the second set 6-0 to send the match into a third set tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Oudin and Coventry traded points and kept it close, but Oudin would come out victorious 10-7 to win the match.
The Terriers return to action on Saturday for Senior Day as they host the Appalachian State Mountaineers at 3 p.m. The match will be Wofford's final home match of the season before they finish off the season with two road matches against Georgia Southern and College of Charleston.
