Junior
Haris Poric, who entered the tournament as the top singles seed in the bracket, faired best for Wofford in the championship singles bracket. He made it to the final eight before falling to South Carolina's Thomas Mayronne 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday. Poric went 2-1 in singles for the tournament.
In doubles, the Poric brothers went 3-1 in the tournament, eventually falling to South Carolina's Thomas Mayronne and Andrew Schafer 6-3 in the semifinal round of the bracket. To make the semifinal round, the pairing beat senior teammates
Parks Thompson and
David Sklar 7-5.
"The championship was a wonderful event not only for our team, but for college tennis in the state of South Carolina," head coach
Rod Ray said at the end of the tournament. "I'm pleased that we had the chance to participate, but I wish that we'd had better results. We're going to get right back to work and make some improvements."
The tournament, originally scheduled to be hosted at the Belton Tennis Center in Belton, S.C., was moved to Furman due to weather conditions. Eight teams including Wofford from the state of South Carolina sent players to compete in the three-day event.
The team is next scheduled to compete in the ITA Regionals October 16-18 hosted in Sumter, S.C.
