Men's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day With a Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team defeated The Citadel Bulldogs 4-3 and honored their two senior players with pre-match festivities Wednesday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.

The Terriers (9-11, 3-3 SoCon) celebrated the careers of seniors David Sklar and Parks Thompson before taking two of three doubles matches and three of six singles matches against the Bulldogs (8-27, 0-6 SoCon) to finish the regular season 8-0 at home for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign.

"We played hard today and I'm proud of this win," Head Coach Rod Ray said after the match. "The Citadel pushed us and gave us the opportunity to make a courageous response. Our doubles play continues to improve every day and it paid dividends today."

Junior Trevor Gotkowski and freshman Kyle Barr started the day for Wofford with a 6-1 doubles victory over The Citadel's Jackson Pride and Connor Grady at the three position. Juniors Haris Poric and Andrew Graham followed suit at the two position with a 6-3 win over Nicholas Bradley and Michael Anzalone to clinch the doubles point for Wofford.

Sklar and Thompson competed at the one position in their 22nd career doubles match as a pairing. They battled Artemie Amari and Matthew Henson of The Citadel in a 6-3 defeat.

In singles, Graham at the six position made quick work of The Citadel's Roy Hobson in a 6-0, 6-1 victory to put Wofford up 2-0. The singles victory is Graham's second in SoCon play.

Terrier sophomore Parks Schoen then earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the five position over the Bulldogs' Anzalone to give Wofford a 3-0 lead in the match. Schoen is 3-1 in singles play in conference and 5-7 overall.

The Bulldogs took the next singles point at the number one position. Poric competed for Wofford, rallying back from down a set against Bradley to force a decisive third set. Bradley however won 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Sklar also fell at the three spot to his opponent Henson. After taking the first set 6-3, Sklar dropped the second and Henson took the third-set as well to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Wofford earned the overall match victory with the next singles win. Barr at the four position fought off a strong challenge from The Citadel's Pride to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and earn his sixth singles victory of the season.

Thompson filled out the lineup at the two position. In his final singles match at home, the senior played his opponent Amari extremely close in a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) loss.

The Terriers finished the regular season undefeated at home for the second time in the team's Division I era (since 1995). The win also moves Wofford to 19-22 all-time against The Citadel and extends their winning streak over the Bulldogs to 10 straight matches.

Wofford concludes the regular season Thursday with a trip to SoCon-rival Furman for a match at 3 p.m. The Southern Conference Tournament starts the following week, hosted from April 22-24 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
