SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's tennis team wrapped up the 2016 regular season with a 4-1 defeat versus the Charlotte 49ers Saturday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.

The Terriers (11-8, 3-4 SoCon) started the match winning two doubles matches against the 49ers (10-9, 0-1 Conference USA) to earn the doubles point, but Charlotte took the first four singles matches to earn the overall victory. The two teams played clinch-style format, with the final doubles and final two singles matches being stopped once the points were decided.

Juniors
Catherine Martin and
Taylor Carlson began Wofford's day with a victory at the three doubles position, defeating Charlotte's Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt 6-2 for their fifth doubles victory as a duo this season.

Sophomores
Lauren Reid and
Samantha Russell also took care of business at the two doubles spot, winning their match 6-1 over Charlotte's Megan Smith and Sierra Stone. The win clinched the doubles point for Wofford and moved the pairing's record to 9-4 on the season.

The one doubles position saw Wofford junior
Kalli Karas and freshman
Cassidy Hicks facing Charlotte's Tai Martin and Pahlett. The visitors were up in the match 3-2 when play was stopped.

In singles, Wofford sophomore
Brooke Graham made her Terrier debut at the six singles position. Charlotte's Alexandra Lee was able to defeat Graham however 6-0, 6-1 to earn the first 49er point.

Junior
Emily Erickson also made her first collegiate appearance for Wofford at the five singles spot. She fell to Charlotte's Smith 6-2, 6-1 in straight sets.

At the one singles position,
Catherine Martin for Wofford dropped her first set and was down in her second set before retiring at 3-6, 2-5 to Pahlett.

Senior
Mareli Sanchez played her second singles match of the season for Wofford, facing Baker at the four position. The senior fell 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets as Charlotte clinched the overall match victory.

Hicks and Carlson rounded out Wofford's singles lineup at the two and three positions, respectively. Hicks dropped her first set against Tai Martin 5-7, but was up 2-1 in the second set when the match was stopped. Carlson was down 2-6, 4-5 to Vonderschmidt at the stop of play.

Through all regular season matches, Wofford holds a 60-50 mark in singles matches and a 28-25 record in doubles matches. The Terriers earlier this season clinched their first winning record since finishing 12-8 in the 2007-08 season.

Wofford concludes the regular season with a fifth place finish in the Southern Conference standings. The Terriers will face either Chattanooga or Samford in their first match, with the first round starting Friday at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The semifinals will take place the next day, with the championship match scheduled for Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m. More details will be announced once the tournament bracket has been finalized.
