SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team overcame a 3-0 deficit and defeated Kennesaw State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.
Â
The win improves the Terriers to 7-3 on the season, including a 6-0 mark at home.
Â
Wofford won despite losing the doubles point and the first two singles matches.
Â
"The chips were down and we refused to go away," coach
Rod Ray said. "We were in a precarious position after going down 3-0. I am proud of how we focused on what they could control to come from behind and win four singles matches in three sets. Kennesaw State is a very good team and their effort brought out the best in us today."
Â
The Owls established the early momentum by easily taking the doubles point, with a 6-0 win in the no. 3 doubles position and a 6-2 win in the no. 1 doubles slot.
Â
Kennesaw State carried the momentum into singles by winning the no. 5 and no. 6 singles match, taking each in straight sets.
Â
Then, with no margin for error, the Terriers battled their way to four consecutive three set singles wins to take the match and remain undefeated at home.
Â
First, in the no. 3 position,
Parks Schoen rallied back after losing his first set to win, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Then,
Haris Poric outlasted the Owls' Simon Pritchard, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to win in the no. 1 singles position.
Â
Wofford pulled even in the match with freshman
Lucas Cerbelli's 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in the no. 2 spot. Cerbelli now has a team high seven singles wins on the season. With the match tied, 3-3, it all came down to fellow freshman
Julian Chousa's match in the no. 4 position. Chousa battled to win a first set tiebreak, before dropping the second set to Kennesaw Sate's Jake Bouchillon. Then, in the third set, Chousa won, 6-4, to complete the comeback for the Terriers.
Â
The win is the Terriers first all season in which they have lost the doubles point.
Â
Up next, the Terriers will break for over a week before resuming play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m., as they take on North Greenville.
