Hannah Steelman Wins 2018 SoCon Cross Country Championship

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams competed at 2018 Southern Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Western Carolina University. Hannah Steelman was the individual champion for the women, marking the first ever individual title in cross country for Wofford.

"We ran really well as a team," said head coach Johnny Bomar. "We had a plan going into the race and they stuck to that plan despite the challenges of a very muddy course. I can't say enough about Hannah. She took off and dropped the hammer early, showing that her hard work this season paid off. Now we are on to the NCAA Regionals."

In the women's 5k race, Steelman posted a time of 17:05.17. She finished 15 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Furman, earning All-Southern Conference honors and Runner of the Year honors. Shannon McAndrew was next across the line for Wofford in 19:14.75 for 28th place. She was followed by Madison Paraskeva (19:24.16), Sommer McKenzie (19:26.99), and Jamie Barnett (19:38.72) to round out the scorers. Rebeka Fadgyas, Mary Stewart Wilson and Anna Lyles also competed for the Terriers.

The men's 8k race was held first and Jack Zemp led the Terriers with a 44th place finish in 27:52.65. He was followed by Ford McCoy (28:06.08), Josh Hendry (28:11.43), Beck Classey (28:13.10), and Ben Boatwright (29:03.98). Walker Gibbs, Jack Moody and Dane Szalwinski also competed for the Terriers.

Overall, Furman won both the men's and women's races. In the women's team competition, Furman earned 25 points to take first. Chattanooga was second with 84 points and Samford third at 103 points. East Tennessee State (126), Wofford (126), Western Carolina (150), UNCG (180), VMI (190), Mercer (250) and The Citadel (281) rounded out the field. The tie for fourth place is the best ever finish for the Terriers and the 126 points marked the lowest total in school history.
