ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford College women's cross country team competed at 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday at Winthrop Farms.
Hannah Steelman finished fourth overall, which qualified her as an individual for the NCAA National Championships.
"It was an awesome race for our women today as a team," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "We had a plan for the day and everyone ran well.
Hannah Steelman never ceases to amaze me. She went out with the top runners and stayed with them the entire race. Now we are on to Wisconsin!"
In the women's 6k race, Steelman posted a school-record time of 19:56.5 to finish fourth overall. She also earned All-Southeast Region honors.
Sommer McKenzie was the next Terrier to cross the finish line in 22:32.1, which is the fourth-fastest 6k time in school history.
Mary Stewart Wilson (22:46.0),
Jamie Barnett (22:47.7),
Shannon McAndrew (22:54.4),
Madison Paraskeva (22:57.5) and
Rebeka Fadgyas (23:12.1) also competed for Wofford and posted times that rank in the top 15 in school history in the 6k. As a team, the women posted a score of 670 points to finish 24
th overall out of 33 teams.
The top four individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the NCAA National Championships. The second place and third place finishers in the region were from N.C. State and Furman, respectively, who will qualify with their teams. Region champion Dorcas Wasike (Louisville), Steelman, Logan Morris (Clemson), and Abigail Green (Virginia) would be the top four individuals.
The NCAA National Championships will be hosted on Saturday, November 17 by the University of Wisconsin. The women's 6K will start at 10:45 a.m. on the Zimmer Championship Course. More information for the national championships is available on NCAA.com.
