Wofford ends the regular season with a 6-11 overall record, 3-6 in conference play. Ending the season on a seven-game losing streak, The Citadel finish with a 5-10-2 overall record, 1-8 in the SoCon.
Shots were coming thick and fast as soon as the opening whistle went. A combined seven shots within the first eight minutes saw both keepers coming up with saves to prevent an early deficit. The Citadel would continue firing the ball with five more shots in the following 20 minutes, but none would threaten Wofford netminder
Maria Mon.
Late in the first half, Wofford would break the scoreless draw with a goal from
Savannah Vathy. Vathy found herself on the end of a corner taken by
Erin Roche to head the ball into the back of the net. Despite being outshot 11-6 in the first half, Wofford had the most important mark on the scoreboard with a one-goal lead into the break.
After an extended halftime due to a lightning delay,
Maria Mon had to make her fourth save of the match 46 seconds in to the second half. Wofford would have its own chance as
Dani Segovia blasted a shot off the woodwork in the 48
th minute.
Mon stayed busy between the sticks as she was tested with multiple shots from various angles throughout the second half and was able to maintain her shutout. Laniee Bohannon almost added a second for Wofford but just like Segovia earlier in the half, her shot also cranked off the crossbar, and the score stayed at 1-0.
With just seven minutes remaining, the Terriers would find themselves down to 10 when
Erin Wolfe was shown a red card. Between the back line of defense and
Maria Mon's incredible performance in net, the Terriers would hold on for a 1-0 victory to end the regular season.
Maria Mon was a brick wall this afternoon. Her 11 saves are a personal-high and team-high for the season.
Katie Gilligan had a team-high four shots and
Savannah Vathy netted her second goal of the season.
Wofford finishes the regular season with 9 points in the conference, which places them as the seventh seed. The Terriers will host the first round of the SoCon Tournament on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm against VMI.
