CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Wofford College women's cross country team competed at 2019 NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday morning at the University of Virginia's Panorama Farms.
Hannah Steelman finished fifth overall, which qualified her as an individual for the NCAA National Championships for the second straight season.
"We had a plan for the race and stuck to it which enabled us to accomplish our goals," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "Hannah led for most of the race and for her to qualify as an individual in back-to-back years is a great achievement. Now we move on to Terre Haute!"
In the women's 6k race, Steelman posted a time of 20:08.1 to finish fifth overall and her time was the second-fastest in school history at the distance.
Taryn Schoen was the next Terrier to cross the finish line in 22:26.1, the seventh-fastest 6k time in school history.
Sommer McKenzie (22:39.0),
Annie Mayfield (23:02.1),
Mary Stewart Wilson (23:57.0) and
Anna Lyles (25:31.2) also competed for the Terriers. As a team, the women posted a score of 604 points to finish 21
st overall out of 43 teams.
The top four individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the NCAA National Championships. The top four individuals were with North Carolina State (first) and Furman (second), with Steelman being the next top individual. Also qualifying as individuals were Ivine Chemutai (Louisville), Paige Hofstad (North Carolina) and Famke Heinst (High Point).
The NCAA National Championships will be hosted on Saturday, November 23 by Indiana State University. The women's 6K will start at 11:15 a.m. on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. More information for the national championships is available on NCAA.com.
