Baseball Begins SoCon Play Against Mercer

THIS WEEKEND
The Terriers will open Southern Conference play this weekend with a home series against Mercer ... Wofford has begun the season 17-10 after a 5-4 loss on Wednesday afternoon at Presbyterian College ... Wofford was 36-23 overall and 15-9 in the Southern Conference last season to finish third ... Mercer is 12-14 overall after a Tuesday night loss to Georgia Southern ... They opened SoCon play last weekend, winning one of the three games against UNCG  ... Last season the Bears were 38-22 overall and 11-13 in the league to finish fifth ... In a series that began in 1905, the Bears hold a 19-11 lead over the Terriers ... In 2018, Mercer won two of the three games played in Macon ... Wofford starters will be LHP Austin Higginbotham (4-2, 3.66 ERA), LHP Hayes Heinecke (5-0, 2.23 ERA) and Sunday is to be determined ... Mercer starters will be LHP Beau Healy (2-1, 3.94 ERA), RHP Kevin Coulter (3-0, 2.17 ERA), and LHP Tanner Hall (2-3, 7.40 ERA).

• OF Colin Davis was named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference first team. Pitchers Austin Higginbotham and Anthony Garcia, along with DH Lawson Hill, were named Preseason All-Southern Conference second team.

ABOUT WOFFORD
In the 2019 season, the team returns four starters in the field along with 13 pitchers ... Overall 22 players returned to the team with 13 newcomers ... This marks the 12th season under the direction of head coach Todd Interdonato ... Leading the team are six seniors: Anthony Garcia, Austin Higginbotham, Davis Keller, Reed Massey, Ty Reginelli and Thomas Tatham ... Among the pitchers, Austin Higginbotham was 6-5 with a 4.50 ERA ... Anthony Garcia had five saves, Jake Hershman had three saves, while Matt Ellmyer had six wins and three saves in relief ... Colin Davis leads the returning position players with a .303 batting average, 73 hits and a team-high 13 home runs ... Brett Rodriguez had 30 stolen bases to lead the Terriers, along with 60 hits ... Andrew Orzel drove in 35 runs on 58 hits.
