CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team won 7-4 over Western Carolina at Hennon Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The game was tied at two when the Terriers plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 4-2 lead. The Catamounts tied the game with two runs in the eighth inning, but Wofford scored three runs in the top of the ninth for the 7-4 final margin.

Wofford is 21-13 on the season and 4-2 in league play. Western Carolina is 13-15 overall and 3-6 in the SoCon. The win gave Wofford the series victory and it was the first series win over the Catamounts in Cullowhee. The Terriers were led by
Hudson Byorick and
Matty Brown with two hits each, while five different players had RBIs. Justice Bigbie had three hits to lead the Catamounts.

The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the first and the Catamounts stranded one after a hit by pitch. In the top of the second with two outs,
Colin Davis reached on an error and
Ethan Cornelius walked. A single by
Matty Brown scored Davis for a 1-0 lead. The Catamounts went in order to end the second inning. Â

After Wofford went in order in the top of the third inning, Western Carolina led off with a single. The runner was stranded at second to end the third. The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the fourth inning and again the Catamounts led off their half of the inning with a single. A hit by pitch followed. On a fielder's choice, a couple of throwing errors by the Terriers allowed a run to score on the play and tie the game at 1-1. Â

In the top of the fifth inning,
Mike Brown walked with two outs. He stole second and moved to third on a throwing error but was out trying to score at home. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Catamounts had a batter reach second on an error. A single drove in the run for a 2-1 lead. Another single was followed by a foul out to strand two runners in scoring position. Wofford's
Lawson Hill singled with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.
Hudson Byorick added a single and a single to right field by
John Dempsey scored Hill to tie the game at 2-2.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles gave the Catamounts runners on the corners. A fly ball ended the inning.
Nolen Hester walked to lead off the seventh inning for the Terriers and
Matty Brown doubled. A ground out by
Mike Brown scored Hester for a 3-2 lead.
Matty Brown then scored on a wild pitch for a 4-2 advantage.
Andrew Orzel and
Brett Rodriguez walked with one out before a double play ended the top half. The Catamounts had a single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and
Mike Brown made a catch at the wall to close the seventh inning.

Colin Davis had a double with two outs in the top of the eighth inning but was unable to advance. Western Carolina had back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, a single and a throwing error allowed two runs to score and tie the game at 4-4. Â A walk to
Matty Brown led off the top of the ninth inning for the Terriers. A fielder's choice by
Mike Brown was followed by an RBI double to the gap in left field by
Andrew Orzel for a 5-4 lead. Orzel stole third base and scored on a ground out by
Brett Rodriguez to make it 6-4. With two outs,
Lawson Hill and
Hudson Byorick singled and
John Dempsey reached on an error that scored Hill for a 7-4 advantage. The Catamounts had a single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before a line out to third base ended the game.

David Yourke started for Wofford and worked four innings with one unearned run allowed on two hits, along with a career-high four strikeouts.
Jake Hershman went 3.2 innings with three runs allowed on eight hits and two strikeouts.
Anthony Garcia (1-2) threw the final 1.1 innings and gave up one hit with two strikeouts.

Western Carolina starter Joe Vranesic went a career-long 6.1 innings with four runs allowed on five hits, while striking out four. Jack Snyder issued two walks. Ty McCulloch (1-2) worked 2.1 innings with three runs allowed on three hits and a strikeout. Blake Therrian recorded the final out.

The Terriers will return home for a Wednesday contest against Presbyterian College at 6:00 p.m. before hosting VMI for a weekend Southern Conference series.
