MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's track and field teams began the 2021 outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. The Terriers had numerous top ten finishes and set four new school records as both teams finished first overall in the Mayor's Relay Cups.
The Wofford women scored a total of 27 points to beat Liberty (26 points) and the men had 33 points to also top Liberty (21 points) in the combined scoring of the four relay events.
On Friday,
Jenna Reid was second in the javelin with a school-record throw of 41.41 meters. Reid added a ninth place in the hammer throw at 44.14 meter.
Rylee Jorgensen was second in the long jump at 5.39 meters and
Chandler Robinson was fifth at 4.92 meters.
Christopher Sheppard was second in the men's long jump at 6.58 meters. In the men's javelin,
Tanner Henry (47.24m) was sixth and
Paul Szuba (46.34m) was seventh.
Netanya Linares was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 3.20 meters to tie the school record. The women's 4x800 relay was third overall and the men were first at 8:27.68. Both the men's and women's 4x200 relay teams were second overall. To end the day,
Beck Classey set a new school record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:44.22 and placed seventh in the event.
Saturday began with the 5,000 meters and
Josh Hendry was fifth overall in 9:11.94. In the 4x100 relay, the women were second at 47.10 and the men's team of
Jaylen Muhammad,
Sam Larkin,
Isaiah Ellis and
Elijah Bull was fourth in a school record time of 41.43.
Alexus Atkins was ninth in the women's mile.
Kerrington Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.09, while
Destiny Shippy was fourth and
Netanya Linares was fifth in the event.
Isaiah Ellis was fourth in the men's 100-meter hurdles at 14.59.
In the 400 meters,
Dahlia Cutler was third in 58.70 for the women.
Kelly Hogan was ninth in the shot put with a throw of 11.88 meters. In the 400-meter hurdles,
Kerrington Johnson was sixth for the women.
Isaiah Ellis and
Elijah Bull were first and second in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 54.66 and 54.76, respectively.
Ryan O'Malley was ninth in the steeplechase at 10:50.33.
T.J. Maxey took seventh place in the pole vault, clearing 4.11 meters.
Chandler Robinson was ninth in the triple jump at 10.84 meters, while
Christopher Sheppard was ninth for the men at 13.46 meters. The 4x400 relay ended the meet, with the women finishing fifth and the men taking first place in 3:21.68.
Teams competing at the meet included Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern, Liberty, Mount St. Mary's, and College of Charleston.
The team will be back in action at the Montreat College Invitational on March 26 and 27.
