Baseball Hosts Western Carolina For Weekend SoCon Series

THIS WEEKEND
The Terriers begin a weekend Southern Conference series on Friday against Western Carolina, with a doubleheader on Saturday ... Wofford has opened the season 14-9 overall after winning one of the three games at Mercer last weekend ... Last season Wofford was 14-3 after a 4-3 win over #14 Auburn before the season was halted ... The Terriers were picked third by the coaches and media in the SoCon Preseason Polls ... Western Carolina is 13-5 on the season after winning two games against The Citadel on Friday, with the third game of the series rained out, and a loss to Tennessee on Tuesday night ... They were picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll after an 8-8 record in 2020 ... The Catamounts hold a 73-24 lead in the series over the Terriers that began in 1950 ... In 2019 the Terriers won two of the three games played in Cullowhee ... The teams will also meet on May 14 and 15 in Cullowhee with the new SoCon divisional scheduling format this season ... The weekend series starters for the Terriers are expected to be LHP Hayes Heinecke (2-4, 4.42 ERA), LHP Sam Stratton (1-1, 225 ERA) and RHP Elliot Carney (3-2, 3.58 ERA) ... The Western Carolina rotation will be RHP Zebby Matthews (4-1, 3.19 ERA), RHP Ryan Mitschele (2-1, 3.91 ERA) and RHP Corey Bright (0-0, 5.40 ERA).

ABOUT WOFFORD
In the 2021 season, the team returns four starters in the field along with 13 pitchers ... Overall 26 players returned to the team with 17 newcomers ... This marks the 14th season under the direction of head coach Todd Interdonato ... Leading the team are eight seniors: Elliot Carney, Colin Davis, Jake Dippold, Lawson Hill, Clay Schwaner, Josh Vitus, David Yourke and Jake Zoller ... Among the pitchers, Hayes Heinecke was 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA and he was named the SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year ... Dalton Rhadans was 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA as a reliver and was tied for first in the SoCon in wins ... Josh Vitus was 1-1 and posted a 2.18 ERA in five starts ... Lawson Hill led the team with a .467 batting average that was second in the SoCon ... Colin Davis was fifth in the league in hits with 23 and had a .348 batting average ... John Dempsey hit .314 with three home runs.

IN THE NCAA RANKINGS
Wofford is currently in top 25 nationally in walks (14th), stolen bases (5th), sacrifice bunts (12th), stolen bases per game (12th) and walked allowed per nine innings (23rd) ... Individually Lawson Hill is ranked in doubles (19th), Shane Lussier is 22nd in sacrifice bunts and Jack Renwick is 10th in stolen bases.

LAST TIME AGAINST WCU
Wofford won two of the three games in the series played in Cullowhee for the first time. On Friday night, Wofford scored ten runs in the first two innings on the way to a 20-5 win. The Catamounts won the second game 4-3 with a walk-off RBI single with two outs. Wofford won 7-4 on Sunday afternoon. Western Carolina leads the all-time series that began in 1950 by a 73-24 margin.
