Cameron Gill (23rd, catcher) being ranked.
•
Ryan Galanie is in contention for the SoCon triple crown, leading the SoCon in average (.416) and RBI (61) while sitting third in homers (15).
•
Jack Renwick is the best bunter in the nation, topping Division I with 24 sacrifices laid down to pace Wofford's national-best 74 sac-bunts. Renwick is already Wofford's career leader in bunts and has set the single-season mark for both Wofford and the SoCon.
• The Terrier pitching staff as a whole has been pinpoint, giving up only 114 walks this season. At a rate of 2.28 per nine innings, this is the lowest mark in the NCAA.
THE JACK ATTACK
Nobody has embodied the Wofford small ball philosophy quite like
Jack Renwick. His 24 sacrifice bunts this season top the nation by a mile. As a junior, he is already Wofford's career leader in sacrifice hits with 40 and counting. The previous mark was 29, originally set by Alex Lee (2008-11). Renwick's career total is good enough to rank sixth all-time in Southern Conference history, and he is two shy of matching fifth place - Georgia Southern's Ben Morgan with 42. His 24 sacrifices this season are a new single-season program record, topping the prior mark set in 2013 by Alex Paradowski. With two sacrifices against Mercer on May 12, Renwick set another record by topping the SoCon's single-season mark for sacrifice hits. He bested the previous high of 22 set in 2017 by Mercer's Jackson Ware. With 78 career stolen bases, Renwick is seven off of the Wofford career record of 85, set by Brett Rodriguez (2017-20).
WALKING ON SUNSHINE
Wofford excelled at working the count in 2021, drawing a program record 301 walks as a team, 11th-best in the nation. Last season, Wofford continued to see the ball well and work counts, drawing 277 free passes to rank third in the conference. This aided Wofford's on base percentage, helping elevate it to a .419 mark, first in the SoCon and seventh in Divison I. The Terriers have drawn 250 walks this season, first in the SoCon, and their .426 OBP tops the league and ranks ninth in the country.
YARD WORK
The Terriers hit 66 home runs in 2017, the most since hitting 74 in 2008. Since then, Wofford's long ball numbers had been decreasing. The Terriers had 49 home runs in 59 games in 2018. The team only hit 28 home runs in each of 2019 and 2021. Wofford hit 51 homers in 2022, the most since that 2017 season, showing a turnaround in regards to the dinger. The Terriers have tallied 52 homers this year, led by
Ryan Galanie with 15. Wofford is continuing its increased power stroke, topping last season's home run clip. In 2022, only nine different Terriers hit a long ball, but 11 different players and counting have clubbed one for Wofford this season to showcase a more balanced power stroke.
LIGHTS, CAMERON, ACTION
Senior catcher
Cameron Gill has been steady throughout his career with Wofford, but he has stepped up in a massive way for his senior campaign. He is slashing .392/.511/.473 with 58 hits, 46 runs and 35 RBI. He leads in the conference in OBP and ranks second in average, and his OBP is 20th in the nation. He is stout behind the plate, committing only two errors all season for a .994 fielding percentage.
WHAT AN HONOR
Multiple Terriers have earned recognitions this week in various capacities. Yesterday,
College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced its Academic All-District Honorees, with five Terriers being recognized:
Ryan Galanie,
Lucas Mahlstedt,
Luke Stephens,
David Wiley and
Trey Yunger. The five selections are a Wofford program record for a single season. For Mahlstedt, the awards didn't stop there, as earlier today the righty was named a semifinalist for the National Pitcher of the Year Award by the College Baseball Foundation. He is the first Terrier to be named a semifinalist for the honor.
