SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference today announced its all-conference awards that are voted on by the league's coaches, with Wofford's
Kate Markey selected to the SoCon All-Freshman Team. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Â
Kate Markey made her presence felt early on for the Terriers, starting in 18 of the 19 games this season. Markey ranks second in minutes on the team with 1,473 and is third in the SoCon amongst freshmen in minutes played. The freshman forward helped lift the team to its strongest offensive season since 2018, providing seven points to place her third on the team. She scored one goal this season while also showing her ability to set her teammates up as she has tallied five assists. The five helpers not only pace the team but lead all freshmen in the SoCon. Markey's five assists are the most by a Terrier since 2017 and the most by a freshman since 2014.
Â
"Kate came in and was solid right from the start," said head coach
Elissa Post. "We had some high expectations for her coming in, but she has definitely surpassed them. She represents the type of player we want in our program - someone who is a great teammate, good leader and works her tail off. She has grown so much this year, and I can't wait to see what she does over her career."
Â
Markey serves as just the ninth all-freshman selection in program history and the third since 2021. There are now three Terriers on the current roster who have garnered all-freshman honors, with
Caileen Almeida earning the recognition in 2021 along with
Ansley Elizalde in 2022.
Â
Wofford is still alive in the SoCon Tournament after a 3-2 win over No. 9 VMI in the opening round on Tuesday. The team will travel to Cullowhee, North Carolina, on Friday, November 1, to take on No. 1 Western Carolina at 7:00 pm.
