Offense Stays Hot as Baseball Takes Series with 15-3 Win

Terriers tally 14 hits and six steals against FDU for double-digit win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The bats have not slowed down for the Wofford baseball team, which raced away to a 15-3 victory this afternoon at Russell C. King Field over FDU. Wofford has improved to 5-1 and claimed the series against the Knights, who fall to 1-5.

Terrier starter Zac Cowan (1-0) earned the win after tossing 6.0 innings of one-run ball. He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out eight, a new single-game high for a Terrier this season and a new career high for the sophomore. Sam Stratton tossed a scoreless inning with a pair of punchouts, and Champ Davis made his season debut with one-third of an inning. He allowed two runs on two hits. John Gray made his collegiate debut by hurling the final 1.2 innings. He gave up only one hit while keeping the Knights off the board.

FDU starter Joey Kosowsky (0-2) took the loss after pitching 4.0 innings and surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks.

The torrid Terrier offense remained red hot with 14 hits this afternoon, four of which went for extra bases. Wofford also stayed true to form with six stolen bases.

Jack Renwick was the top Terrier at the dish with three hits, two of which were doubles. He drove home a team-high four RBI. Marshall Toole was the only other Terrier with a multi-hit outing, tallying two hits with a walk. The other nine hits were evenly dispersed between nine other Terriers.

Dixon Black reached four total times with a hit and three walks, driving home two runs. Daniel Jackson also recorded a hit and three walks with one RBI. Freshmen Carter Hanson, Ethan Belk and Ryan Wynn all recorded their first collegiate hits. Wynn drove home two runs. Gunnar Johnson added three RBI in the game with his lone hit.

On the bases, David Wiley swiped a pair of bags while Toole added another to his ledger. Tyler Bak and Hanson both tallied their first-career stolen base, and Lucas Manning added one himself.

Wofford wasted no time getting on the board with a sacrifice fly by Andrew Mannelly in the bottom of the first.

Two innings later, Brice Martinez added one of his own to make the score 2-0 after three innings.

Like Friday night's opener, FDU fell victim to a big Terrier inning. Today's was the fifth, during which Wofford plated seven runs. The scoring started when Gunnar Johnson came up with the bases loaded and emptied them with his single up the middle. Jack Renwick would double Johnson home, and another run scored with a wild pitch. The onslaught concluded with a Dixon Black two-run double, making the margin 9-0.

The Knights avoided the shutout with a run in the sixth by way of an RBI single. But Wofford got that run right back in the bottom of the frame with a Daniel Jackson RBI single. The score was 10-1 after six innings.

FDU added a pair un the top of the eighth. A run-scoring double was followed by an RBI fielder's choice, making the score 10-3. But the Terriers again had an answer in the bottom of the inning with a five spot. With the bases loaded, Renwick ripped a ball down the left field line that just stayed fair, clearing the bags. Later in the frame, Ryan Wynn delivered a two-run single to left, making the score 15-3.

That is where it stood as John Gray stood firm in his debut, keeping the Knights at bay to seal the 15-3 triumph and 2-0 series advantage.

The squads square off one final time tomorrow afternoon for game three. Wofford looks for the sweep with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch at Russell C. King Field.
