SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was running wild on the basepaths Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field, stealing a program-record 13 bases as Wofford defeated FDU 12-10 to secure the series sweep. The Terriers move to 6-1 on the season with FDU dropping to 1-6.
Â
Terrier reliever
Mike Eggert (1-0) garnered the win as the first arm out of the bullpen. He tossed 1.1 innings with one run allowed on two hits. Eggert relieved starter
Dylan Rhadans, who hurled 2.2 innings with three runs (two earned) allowed with three hits and four punchouts to no walks.
Morgan Lunceford pitched 4.1 innings with six runs allowed on five hits and four strikeouts before turning the ball over to
Sam Stratton (1), who notched the save by securing the final two outs. Stratton allowed one hit but recorded a strikeout and iced the game by fielding the final ground ball and making the throw in time to first.
Â
"I just needed to go out there, get my offspeed on the plate and trust my defense – those guys are great behind me and help me. So I just trusted them and filled up the zone," said Stratton of locking down the game. "
Â
FDU starter Zac Capps (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks in 2.2 innings of work.
Â
Wofford's offense remained hot with 14 hits. With 12 runs in today's contest, the Terriers outscored the Knights 41-14 in the series. With 13 stolen bases in today's game, Wofford set a new single-game program record, topping the previous high of 12 steals in 2014 against Alcorn State.
Â
"I did not know that, but it doesn't surprise me really," said
Marshall Toole of the stolen base record. "If they were going to give us the chances to take them, we were going to do it."
Â
Marshall Toole paced the Terriers with four steals, tying his career high.
Jack Renwick added two of his own, and the other seven swipes were spread evenly amongst seven players with one each.
Â
At the plate,
Andrew Mannelly had a career day with four hits and four RBI, both new career bests. One of his hits was a home run.
Gunnar Johnson added three hits, and Renwick posted two of his own with an RBI. Toole tallied two runs knocked home with a hit and a pair of walks.
Tyler Hare added one hit, a home run, and he reached a second time with a walk.
David Wiley reached base three times with a hit and two walks while adding an RBI.
Dixon Black also had an RBI with a hit and a walk.
Â
"The thing we take pride in with this offense, starting with
J.J. Edwards to
Hudson Byorick and how it's implemented through the fall, is that anybody can make a major impact throughout the course of nine innings," said associate head coach
Josh Schulman. "Guys off the bench, pinch-hit, pinch-running, to the guys in the lineup, and whether it's Andrew (Mannelly) having a home run and a great day at the plate with four hits or
Tyler Hare going deep to little singles and bunts. All those little things make us just that more deadly on offense, and as a coaching staff we could not be prouder of how our guys one-through nine embrace just getting your best tools on the field and make the most of it."
Â
The Knights struck first this afternoon with an RBI groundout to lead 1-0 early.
Â
Wofford bounced back in the second inning with four runs to claim a lead it would not look back from. To start,
Tyler Hare tied the game with a solo shot to right center, and
Marshall Toole later added a two-run single up the middle that pushed Wofford in front. A fourth run would scurry home thanks to an RBI triple by
Dixon Black, making the score 4-1.
Â
FDU would push back in the top of the third with a two-run home run to cut the margin to one run. But in the bottom of the inning, Wofford got those runs back. On a unique play,
Gunnar Johnson swiped home with Hare coming home as well by way of a Knight error. The Terrier lead stood at 6-3.
Â
But in the fourth, FDU played long ball again with a solo home run. The bottom of the inning saw another four-bagger, this one by
Andrew Mannelly, to make the score 7-4.
Â
Mannelly struck again in the fifth with an RBI single to push the margin to 8-4.
Â
The Knights hit another solo homer in the seventh before Mannelly came up big once more in the bottom of the inning. With a two-run double, the Terriers reached double-digits with a 10-5 lead.
Â
In the eighth, a
David Wiley infield single plated a run before Renwick drove home another with a single of his own. The Terriers led 12-6.
Â
FDU would not go quietly, however, pushing forth five runs in the top of the ninth. But
Sam Stratton came out of the bullpen and iced the contest to record the final two outs and seal the 12-10 Terrier triumph.
Â
Wofford hits the road for the first time this season with a midweek match-up at Charlotte. First pitch against the 49ers is set for 4:00 p.m. before the Terriers return home for a weekend set against Fordham.
