Renwick Steals Record as Baseball Sweeps Lafayette

Terriers tally another sweep behind 27-4 triumph

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team deposited 18 hits and threatened its newly-minted single-game runs record with a 27-4 victory Sunday afternoon over Lafayette at Russell C. King Field. A record day, Wofford worked a record-tying 17 free passes as Jack Renwick became the program's leader in stolen bases with his seventh-inning swipe. The Terriers improve to 12-2 with the win as Lafayette drops to 1-12.

Wofford starter Braden Hofmeyer (3-0) recorded the win with 5.0 innings of work with four strikeouts and two runs allowed on four hits and four walks. Morgan Lunceford tossed two-thirds of an inning before he was followed by Sam Stratton, who hurled 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings, striking out five batters to match his career best. Dom Marcoccio pitched the final inning with a 1-2-3 effort.

Leopard starter Joe Skapinetz (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up eight runs in 1.2 innings on six hits and three walks.

The Terrier offense remained red hot with 18 hits, but it wasn't all base knocks doing the damage as the patient Wofford offense worked 17 total walks, tying the program's single-game record set in 2009 against North Carolina A&T.

Dixon Black paced the efforts with four hits and six RBI, a career high for runs driven in. Andrew Mannelly recorded three hits with a career-best five RBI, and the trio of Marshall Toole, Tyler Bak and Daniel Jackson all recorded two hits each. Toole drove in two runs with Jackson pushing across three. Toole added three walks, as did Brice Martinez. In all, 10 Terriers had a hit with 12 total working a walk.

But the highlight of the day was Jack Renwick's stolen base, one of Wofford's four swipes. Renwick's steal was the 86th of his illustrious career, granting him sole possession of the program record that he tied yesterday, now topping the mark set by Brett Rodriguez.

The scoring opened with a two-run double by Gunnar Johnson in the bottom of the first inning, but Lafayette tied the game with two runs of its own in the second. However, Wofford had an answer in the bottom of the frame with an immediate eight-spot. Dixon Black hit a two-run double of his own before Andrew Mannelly knocked a run-scoring single. Daniel Jackson followed with his own single for two runs, and David Wiley tripled home a pair. Marshall Toole worked a bases-loaded walk for a 10-2 lead.

In the fourth, Wofford tacked on another with a Toole solo shot, his second-straight game with a homer off the right field scoreboard.

The Leopards were spotted two runs in the sixth, but Wofford again responded with five in the bottom of the inning. Black had an RBI single before Mannelly doubled in two runs. A wild pitch then plated Black before Jackson singled in Mannelly, making the score 16-4.

In the seventh, Black struck once more with a two-run triple to make the margin 18-4.

The eighth inning saw nine more score for Wofford. Three runs scored with bases-loaded miscues, two being a hit-by-pitch and the third a walk. Mannelly singled in two before Ryan Wynn roped a run-scoring double to right. Another bases-loaded walk was followed by another bases-loaded hit batsman, and the onslaught concluded finally with a Logan Tribble RBI fielder's choice. The score stood at 27-4 after the frame in which 15 Terriers came to the plate. The first out was not recorded until the 10th batter of the inning.

Dom Marcoccio came on to pitch the ninth, delivering a 1-2-3 outing to seal the win and sweep for Wofford.

The Terriers will hit the road this weekend for its first series away from home, traveling to Charleston for a three-game set against College of Charleston. Game ne against the former SoCon foe is set for Friday, March 15, at 4:00 p.m.
