Wofford Baseball Set to Face LSU in Opening Game of Chapel Hill Regional

Wofford is fresh off claiming the 2024 Southern Conference Championship, just the second SoCon Tournament title in program history and first since 2007. The Terriers enter the NCAA Tournament for just the second time and will be the No. 3 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional, hosted by No. 4 overall seed North Carolina. Wofford is joined by the defending national champion LSU and LIU, champion of the NEC. The Terriers will face the Tigers first, and it marks the first-ever meeting between the programs. Wofford has never faced LIU either, and the Terriers and Tar Heels have met six times before but not since 1918. Wofford is 41-18 (12-8 SoCon) after playing seven games in five days during the SoCon Tournament. LSU is 40-21 (13-17 SEC) entering the match-up, and the Tigers are coming off a tournament championship appearance as well, but LSU fell 4-3 to No. 1 Tennessee in the final. The regional is a four-team double-elimination format. Wofford is guaranteed at least two games and will play again on Saturday against either UNC or LIU, depending on day one outcomes.

RECORD WATCH
Numerous Terriers have etched their names across the Wofford record book this season while threatening to topple more marks. Marshall Toole has grabbed a handful of single-season records, notably swiping 44 bases to best a 43-year-old record (39, Tim Renfrow, 1981). His 93 hits are a new program record as he became the first Terrier ever to reach 90. Toole's 10 triples top the previous high of seven by Mac Doyle in 2010, and his 81 runs best the previous high of 73 set trice prior. Brice Martinez owns 91 hits, marking the first time in program history that two Terriers own 90-plus base knocks. With 75 RBI, Dixon Black has tied the program's season record set originally by Mac Doyle in 2010. All he needs is one more RBI to claim sole possession of the mark. As for career records, Jack Renwick has claimed the program marks for steals (95) and runs scored (195). With 229 games starter, Renwick has tied former teammate Lawson Hill for the program record and will best it with one more start. With 231 games played, Renwick needs five more games to match Hill's record of 236. He is also three doubles shy of tying the program record of 60 set by Kyle Behrendt. On the mound, Zac Cowan has tossed 104.0 innings as just the 11th Terrier ever to reach triple-digits. The record is 116.0 innings by Kyle Hadden in 2000. Cowan's 118 strikeouts are third most in a season in the program's history, and he is chasing Adam Scott's record of 137 from 2018.

30 ROCKS
With Wofford claiming its 30th win of the season on Sunday, May 5, at Gardner-Webb, the Terriers secured a 30-win season for the sixth-straight full season (COVID-shortened 2020 campaign excluded). J.J. Edwards, already the winningest first-year head coach in program history, is now the first skipper in program history to notch 30 or more victories in his first year at the helm. Wofford's streak of now six years in a row with 30-plus wins is the longest active run by a SoCon school. Mercer had been in front with eight-straight 30-win campaigns since joining the league, but the Bears finished with 29 wins this season to fall just short of extending their streak. During the SoCon Tournament, Wofford reached the 40-win threshold for the third-straight season.

SMALL BALL
Wofford, or Bunt School, uses a combination of stolen bases and sacrifice bunts to advance on the basepaths. The Terriers have swiped 144 bags this season, seventh nationally and second in the SoCon behind only VMI's 178. Wofford's 2.44 steals per game clip is ninth in the nation. With 52 sacrifices laid down, Wofford is sixth in the nation and best in the conference. Marshall Toole leads the way with 10 sacrifices to lead the league and rank 26th in the nation. Jack Renwick's eight sacrifices are sixth in the SoCon. Eleven total Terriers have put down at least two sacrifices. On the bases, Toole is a near-perfect 42-for-45 on stolen bases, tops in the SoCon and barely second in the nation. Wofford has stolen at least one base in every game but 10 this season. The Terriers have stolen at least three bases in 23 games and five or more in 11 contests.

GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE
The Wofford offense has been almost unstoppable so far in 2024, totaling 603 runs through 59 games of the season to already top the previous program record for runs in a season (499, 2023). At an average of 10.2 per game, the Terriers are second in the country in scoring per game. This is aided by the country's third-best on-base percentage (.444) and batting average (.340) and  second-most hits (696). With 33 triples, the Terriers also top the nation and have set a new single-season program record. Wofford has scored double-digit runs in 28 games so far this season and outscored its opponents 603-350. The Terriers have recorded 20 or more runs four times, including twice scoring 29 runs, a new single-game program record. Three of Wofford's 20-plus scoring outings totaled 27 or more runs, making the Terriers one of only four teams in the nation to do so at least twice (Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Texas Tech and FDU). The Red Raiders and Knights have done so twice with the Lions matching Wofford at three times, but two of those instances were against Division II opposition. Therefore, Wofford is the only program in the nation to tally 27 or more runs against Division I opposition three times this season. Wofford has recorded double-digit hits 36 times and in 13 of the last 15 games.  It has been a balanced attack, as six of the eight qualified Terrier hitters are batting over .300.

TRIPLE THREAT
The Terriers have been hitting triples with ease this season, posting 33 three-baggers to top the nation, one ahead of the next-closest squad (Northern Kentucky, 32). Those 33 triples are now a program record for a season, topping the previous mark of 22 set twice prior in 1985 and 2016. Individually, 10 Terriers have a triple with five boasting at least three triples. Marshall Toole touts the most with 10, most in the SoCon and second in the country. Dixon Black adds five for third in the league and 18th nationally, and Brice Martinez boasts four at fourth in the conference. Toole's total is a new single-season program record, besting Mac Doyle's seven from 2011. The Terriers have so many triples that if Toole's 10 were removed from the team's total, the new mark of 23 would still lead the SoCon, three above UNCG's 20, and the Terriers would still clock in at sixth nationally.

YARD WORK
The Terriers hit 66 home runs in 2017, the most since hitting 74 in 2008. Since then, Wofford's long ball numbers had been decreasing. The Terriers had 49 home runs in 59 games in 2018. The team only hit 28 home runs in each of 2019 and 2021. Wofford hit 51 homers in 2022, the most since that 2017 season, sparking a turnaround in regards to the dinger. The Terriers tallied 58 homers last year, led by Ryan Galanie with 17. In 2022, only nine different Terriers hit a long ball, but 11 different players clubbed one for Wofford last season to showcase a more balanced power stroke. So far in 2024, Tyler Hare paces the squad with 16 homers as one of nine with a long ball. But Dixon Black is not far behind with 13 round-trippers of his own, and Daniel Jackson adds 12 to mark a trio in double-digits. The Terriers own 74 homers this season and have put up two games with six long balls clubbed. This is the most big flies by the club since hitting 74 in 2008, and with one more it would be the most since the program record number of 108 in 2007, which was during the live bat era of NCAA baseball.

A RESOUNDING INTRODUCTION
First-year head coach of the Terriers J.J. Edwards is one of only four first-year coaches in this season's NCAA Tournament. He joins UCF's Rich Wallace, Southern Mississippi's Christian Ostrander and Georgia's Wes Johnson. Edwards and Ostrander were the only two to lead their respective squads to at least 40 wins this season with both tallying 41.
