SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams began the 2024 season on Friday afternoon in the Eye Opener meet at the Roger Milliken Research Center Park. The women were fifth and the men were 12th overall in the meet.
In the women's 5K race,
Becca Hinds was 35
th overall in 19:15.88 to lead the Terriers.
Mary Claire Ridgeway was 40
th at 19:19.10, with
Ava Fowler (19:59.58),
Franny Tocco (20:13.74), and
Carolyne Shealy (20:36.13) rounding out the scorers for Wofford. Also competing were
Kimber Keene (21:10.43),
Chloe Gilbert (21:11.73),
Kristen Hallman (22:06.06),
Emma O'Connell (22:24.21), and
Dannielle King (25:27.42).
The men's 8K competition followed and
Liam Jones was the top Terrier finisher at 27:22.99 for 53
rd place.
Will Berger was next for Wofford in 28:39.90, followed by
Nate Hopkins (28:41.98),
Andrew York (28:42.85), and
John Bolinger (29:29.04) scoring for the Terriers.
James Moon (29:42.37),
Turner Knox (29:56.72),
Ethan Hearn (30:11.21), and
Grant Eady (35:43.17) also finished the race for Wofford.
Overall, Clemson was first in the women's race of 17 teams with 26 points, followed by Furman, East Tennessee State, UNC Pembroke and Wofford. The men's race of 18 teams was won by Furman with 20 points, with Clemson, East Tennessee State, UNC Pembroke, and USC Upstate rounding out the top five.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Saturday, September 14, at the Furman Invitational.
