SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Head women's golf coach Angie Ridgeway announced the signings of Nicole Chin and Lela Oakley on Monday, as Wofford's incoming class for the 2014-15 season.
"Both members of our 2014 class have extensive tournament experience and will play key roles in the future success of our program," Ridgeway said. "On top of that, they are fine individuals, and I look forward to what they will bring to the Terriers."
Nicole Chin – Irmo, S.C. – Dutch Fork HS
Nicole Chin comes to Wofford after lettering for six seasons in women's golf at Dutch Fork High School in her hometown of Irmo, S.C. Chin played in the No. 1 spot all six years, and was coached by Lee Duncan from seventh to 10th grade, followed by Greg Hamm her junior and senior years. Chin helped Dutch Fork finish top 20 in the 4A State Tournament in four times, earning five individual top 10s, including a third-place showing her sophomore 2011-12 season. She is Dutch Fork's captain for the 2013-14 season.
Individually, Chin was a medalist in six tournaments in the sub junior division from 2007-10. In 2007, she earned her first at the PGA Westfield Jr. Championship. Chin's 2008 season saw her medal five times as a sub junior before earning the medalist in her first junior division tournament, the 2008 NJGA SC Low Country in Charleston.
In the junior division from 2008-13, Chin was a medalist six more times. The most came in 2011, when she was the medalist of the Annual Blade Junior Championship, Western NC Junior Championship and Linrick City Tournament. In 33 junior division tournaments, Chin earned 32 top 10s and 16 top fives to go along with her six tournament victories. Her most recent victory came in 2012, successfully defending her Linrick City Tournament title.
Chin's career-best South Carolina State Ranking is No. 14, and her best National Ranking is No. 316.
Academically, Chin is a STEM graduate and will graduate with honors from Dutch Fork. She was on the A/B Honor Roll all four years, and her activities included the Beta Club, Technical Beta Club and Christian Youth Group.
Born Jan. 28, 1996 in Manila, Philippines, Nicole is the daughter of James and Michelle Chin. She plans to major in biology.
Lela Oakley – Cheraw, S.C. – Cheraw HS
Lela Oakley joins the Wofford women's golf team after lettering in women's golf for six years under head coach Barry Brown at Cheraw High School in Cheraw, S.C. Oakley helped Cheraw to three South Carolina 3A State Tournaments, including top-10 finishes of eighth place in 2009 and ninth place in 2010. Oakley's 2013 squad took 11th at the state tournament.
Individually, Oakley boasts numerous accolades. In 2012, she was named nearby Chesterfield High School Girl's Golf MVP, and followed it up with the same award in 2013. The 2013 season also saw Oakley earn Cheraw High School Golf Team MVP, and be named to the all-region squad.
Academically, Oakley was a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Oakley currently stands in the top 10 percent of her high school class.
Born May 2, 1996 in Florence, S.C., Lela is the daughter of Keith and Michele Oakley. She is currently undeclared on a major.
