LAKE MARY, Fla. – The men's golf team polished off its first championship of the spring season and second of the 2015-16 academic year on Tuesday, dominating The Legacy Intercollegiate by 28 shots with a winning score of 5-under-par 859.
The Terriers were led by the performances of
Jeremy Grab and
Andrew Novak. The junior duo shared the individual title at 7-under-par 209 and were seven shots better than the rest of the 74-man field.
By the time they made the turn at The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes, Grab and Novak were in a two-man race. Grab entered Tuesday's final round with a two-shot lead on his teammate, but Novak drew level on the par-4, 453-yard 13th. Grab retook the lead with back-to-back birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 15th, but Novak birdied the par-3 17th to get within a shot and Grab bogeyed the last to split the title.
"Glad to share it with this dude," Grab told Golfweek. "He's playing great golf, and if I can tie him it always means I'm playing well."
The title is the second Grab has shared on his junior campaign, also tying for first at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate in October. Meanwhile, Novak made it back-to-back tournaments with a trophy. Last week, he set Wofford's program record for a tournament score in relation to par by winning the Wexford Plantation at 13 under.
"The course was beautiful," added Grab. "The greens were running well and the course was playing really nice. I hope to come back down here some time."
"The course was pretty good and the weather was incredible, which helped," said Novak, who fired a final-round 3-under-par 69 to catch Grab. "It was a good, tough test. It was not an easy course, but I hit some good shots and kept it straight."
Sophomores
Drake Cassidy and
Evan Grenus also had solid tournaments. Each finished inside the top 20, with Cassidy taking 11th at 4-over 220 and Grenus taking 16th at 7-over 223.
Senior walk-on
Patrick Langdon carded four birdies in his final-round 2-over 74. Langdon finished tied for 48th at 18-over 234.
The Terriers will look to stay hot for a third consecutive week at The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. The tournament tees off next Monday, March 7, at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
