GREENVILLE, S.C. – A final-round 3-under-par 69 earned Wofford junior
Andrew Novak a second-place finish on Easter Sunday at the Furman Intercollegiate. Novak completed the three-day, 54-hole tournament with an impressive score of 10-under-par 206 (67-70-69).
Â
Novak entered Sunday's final round three shots behind USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield, who took the 36-hole lead following an 8-under 64 on Saturday. Starting on the back nine. Novak parred the first five holes before sinking an eagle at the par-5 15th – his third eagle of the tournament. A birdie right before the turn got the Mt. Pleasant native to 3-under on the round and two more birdies on the par-4 first and par-4 third brought Novak into a tie for the tournament lead with Cornfield at 12-under-par.
Â
Novak and Cornfield remained tied with three holes to play, but it was Cornfield who won it down the stretch. Novak completed his tournament with a bogey on the par-4 seventh and pars on eight and nine. Meanwhile, Cornfield, who started on four, parred the first, birdied the par-5 second and birdied his closing par-4 third to win the title. Cornfield's 13-under 203 tied the Furman Intercollegiate scoring record.
Â
Novak's runner-up finish marked the fifth top five and sixth top 10 of his junior campaign. His 10-under tournament was the second-lowest 54-hole score in relation to par of his collegiate career, three shots behind his school-record 13-under 203 from February at Wexford.
Â
As a team, the Terriers climbed all the way seventh thanks to their best round of the tournament. Wofford carded a 6-under-par 282 on Sunday and closed the 19-team, 54-hole event at 2-over-par 866. Georgia State (-23) won the team title.
