AIKEN, S.C. – The men's golf team competed against some of the nation's best collegiate golf teams on Monday and Tuesday in The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational. The Terriers took 13th in the 18-team field with a three-round score of 43-over-par 883.
Five of college golf's top 50 teams participated in the tournament held at Palmetto Golf Club – recognized as the fourth-oldest golf course in the United States. No. 22 South Carolina ran away with the team title at 19-under 821. No. 36 Virginia finished 18 shots behind in second at 1-under 839.
Other ranked teams included No. 35 Augusta, No. 43 NC State and No. 45 East Carolina. Augusta and ECU also finished in the top five. The Wolfpack tied for sixth.
Wofford was led by the play of junior duo
Jeremy Grab and
Andrew Novak. Grab slotted himself in the top 25 with rounds of 75, 68 and 74 for a 7-over-par 217. Novak placed a shot behind in 29th with rounds of 70, 76 and 72. The course played as a 6,617-yard, par-70.
Rounding out Wofford's team competitors were senior
Patrick Langdon (+15), sophomore
Drake Cassidy (+16) and sophomore
Evan Grenus (+18).
South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith – ranked No. 62 by Golfstat – won the tournament by one shot over Augusta's Maverick Antcliff. NeSmith carded back-to-back rounds of 3-under 67 on Monday and finished off with a final-round 1-under 69 for a winning total of 7-under-par 203.
Six of the nation's top 100 NCAA Div. I men's golfers were in the field.
The Wofford men's golf team takes a few weeks off before its next tournament, the Furman Intercollegiate, which begins March 25 at Furman Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
