SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team wrapped up fall practice with the Black and Gold Series held on November 14, 15, and 16. The Gold team, led by Frederic Reynolds and Drake Nisbet, lost the first game but responded by winning the second and third games to take the series 2-1.
To open the series, the Gold team took an early 2-0 lead on a
Marshall Toole triple and a Tyler Hare double. The Black team answered with five runs in the bottom of the second inning as
Jack Renwick and
Gunnar Johnson drive in runs. In the seventh inning the Gold team came back to tie the game with an RBI double from Tyler Hare and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Wynn. With the bases loaded for the Black team, a walk by
Alex Nevils plated the winning run for a 6-5 final. Player of the Game was
Jack Renwick (2-4, RBI, 2 stolen bases) and the Pitcher of the game was
Champ Davis (3.2, 2 earned runs, 3 strikeouts).
In the second game, the Black team took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by
Gunnar Johnson and an RBI double by
David Wiley. A bunt single by Tyler Bak plated a run for a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Lucas Manning had a triple that scored two runs and a sacrifice fly by Adam Haber tied the game at 3-3. Daniel Jackson had a walk-off RBI single to give the Gold team a 4-3 win and to tie the series at 1-1. The Player of the Game was Daniel Jackson with an RBI single and a walk, while
Zac Cowan was the Pitcher of the Game with 5.0 innings pitched with one hit allowed and six strikeouts.
On Thursday to close out the series, the Gold team had a double by Lucas Manning and an RBI double by Tyler Hare for a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Black team pushed one run across in the top of the fifth, but the Gold team answered with three runs in the bottom half for a 5-1 advantage. In the sixth inning, the Gold team added four runs with a bunt single by
Marshall Toole, a sacrifice fly by Daniel Jackson and a two RBI double by
Aaron Thomas.
Dixon Black added an RBI double in the seventh for the 10-1 final margin. The series MVP was Tyler Hare.
"We asked a lot of our players this fall from a development standpoint," said head coach
J.J. Edwards. "They were able to retain everything that we taught them and came a long way overall in the fall. We are excited about the upcoming season and continuing to build the Wofford baseball program."

Gunnar Johnson was the top position player and
Zac Cowan was the top ranked pitcher.
The Terriers' 2024 regular season is slated to begin at Russell C. King Field on Friday, February 16, against Bucknell.
