Novak (-13) Sets Wofford Record in Victory

Terrier junior finishes birdie-birdie to hold off Holliday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Andrew Novak won the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate by 2 shots over USC-Aiken's Johnson Holliday on Tuesday. Novak fired a final-round 6-under-par 66 to win the tournament with a three-round total of 13-under-par 203, setting a new Terrier men's golf program record for tournament score in relation to par.

Novak entered Tuesday's final round with a 2-shot lead, but Holliday had cut it down to a single stroke with both golfers entering their final two holes. The Mt. Pleasant native sealed the victory with a birdie-birdie finish at the par-5 fifth and par-3 sixth, besting Holliday's birdie-par finish on 17 and 18 for his first collegiate tournament title.

Novak played the last 36 holes of the tournament with 11 birdies and no bogeys. His final-round 66 tied the Wexford Plantation course record.

"I got into a zone. I've been there before, but I don't know if I've ever played 36 holes of bogey-free golf in a tournament," said Novak, who broke Neil O'Briain's previous school record of 10-under-par at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate in the fall of 2006. "I hit everything straight off the tee, hit my approach shots close and made my putts."

Entering the par-5, 543-yard fifth, Novak was informed by assistant coach Brannan Hudson that his lead was just one. Novak stepped up and ripped a tee shot that gave him an opportunity to go for the green in two. His approach rolled within 20 feet of the cup and he two-putted for birdie.

Novak cemented the victory on the 165-yard sixth, hitting his tee shot within six feet and closing out an impressive tournament with his sixth birdie of the day.

"Finishing a tournament with a 67 and a 66 is extremely impressive," head coach Vic Lipscomb said. "I'm even more impressed that he didn't make any bogeys through those last two rounds. I'm very proud of his performance."

Novak's title is the second by a Terrier on the 2015-16 campaign. Fellow junior Jeremy Grab shot a 3-under-par 207 to win the Donald Ross Intercollegiate in October.

Wofford finished the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate tied for sixth in the 17-team field. The Terriers posted a three-round total of 22-over-par 886.

Novak and the Terriers are back in action next Monday and Tuesday at the Stetson University Invitational. The tournament will take place at The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes in Longwood, Fla.
