Wofford Baseball Travels to Low Country for Three-Game Set

Terriers face former SoCon foe College of Charleston in weekend tilt

Wofford embarks on a trip to the Low Country for its first road weekend series of the season. The Terriers face the College of Charleston after a weekend sweep at home over Lafayette, entering the series with a 12-2 record and six-game winning streak. The Cougars sit at 10-5 on the season after taking two-of-three from Penn at home last weekend before falling 7-5 to crosstown foe Charleston Southern in midweek play. Charleston leads the all-time series 38-23, but Wofford won the last meeting between the two former SoCon rivals. That win was a 10-5 margin for the Terriers in Charleston in midweek play last season.

QUICK HITS
• Wofford boasts the best batting average in the nation with a .383 clip.
• With an OBP of .505 and runs per game mark of 13.8, Wofford also leads the country.
• The Terriers are outscoring their opponents 193-58 this season.
• All nine qualified Terriers are hitting over .300 with two boasting clips of .400 or better.
• The 2024 campaign is the first under the leadership of head coach J.J. Edwards, who earned his first win against Towson.
• Wofford's 54 stolen bases are currently second in the nation.
• Marshall Toole's 15 steals are the most by a player in the country. He is still perfect on attempts and remains the only Terrier to reach base in each game this season.
• Wofford has set three single-game program records this season: steals (13), runs (29) and hits (26).
• Jack Renwick is Wofford's new career stolen base leader with 86, topping Brett Rodriguez and his 85 swipes.
• Braden Hofmeyer touts a 1.23 ERA, best in the SoCon.
• Dixon Black is the reigning SoCon Player of the Week.
• With 153 steals last season, Wofford has stolen 100 or more bases in 10-straight full seasons dating back to 2013, the longest active streak in Division I.

GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE
The Wofford offense has been almost unstoppable so far in 2024, totaling 193 runs through the first 12 games of the season, sixth most in the nation. At an average of 13.8 per game, the Terriers lead the country in scoring. This is aided by the country's best batting average (.383) and on-base percentage (.503) and 14th-most hits (188). Wofford has scored double-digit runs in every game but three so far this season and outscored its opponents 193-58.  It has been a balanced attack, as all nine qualified Terrier hitters are batting over .300 with two of them sitting over .400. Dixon Black (.463) and Marshall Toole (.462) are both over .400 with Gunnar Johnson (.390) knocking on the door. Joining Johnson above .300 are David Wiley (.387), Andrew Mannelly (.385), Brice Martinez (.385), Jack Renwick (.383), Tyler Hare (.367) and Daniel Jackson (.333). Wofford owns double-digit hits in every game but three, including each of the last five games.

BACK IN BLACK
Senior Dixon Black made an immediate impact with the program upon transferring in last season. After spending his first two seasons with Monmouth, Black joined the Terriers last season to immediate success. The third baseman hit .315 with 73 total hits, 46 RBI, seven home runs and 14 stolen bases. He slugged .478 en route to a Second-Team All-SoCon selection at year's end. After a number change for this year, switching from No. 20 to No. 7, Black enters 2024 poised for another season of key contribution and is hitting .463 so far. He touts 25 hits with 21 runs scored and 26 runs driven in. He is slugging .722 with a .543 on-base mark and 12 walks drawn with three stolen bases. His hit total is one shy of the league lead, and his RBI are also second and rank 17th nationally. Black owns the second-best batting average in the SoCon, which is 23rd in the nation. His on-base clip is fifth and slugging mark eighth. With three triples, he leads the conference and ranks fourth nationally. Black has totaled 198 hits between his time at Monmouth and at Wofford, meaning he needs just two more to reach the coveted 200 hits milestone for his career.

THE JACK ATTACK
Nobody has embodied the Wofford small ball philosophy quite like Jack Renwick. His 28 sacrifice bunts last season topped the nation by a mile, 15 more than the next-closest players. A senior, he is Wofford's career leader in sacrifice hits with 47 and counting. The previous mark was 29, originally set by Alex Lee (2008-11). Renwick's career total is good enough to rank fourth all-time in Southern Conference history. Renwick is six shy of the leader, College of Charleston's Brett Gardner with 53. Only Samford's Brad Moss (50) and Mercer's Jackson Ware (51) stand between Renwick and Gardner. His 28 sacrifices last season are a new single-season program record, topping the prior mark set in 2013 by Alex Paradowski. With two sacrifices against Mercer on May 12, Renwick set another record by topping the SoCon's single-season mark for sacrifice hits. He bested the previous high of 22 set in 2017 by Mercer's Jackson Ware. With 86 career stolen bases, Renwick is the new Wofford career record holder, topping the prior mark of 85 set by Brett Rodriguez (2017-20). On top of it all, this season Renwick is batting .383 with 19 runs scored and 16 RBI alongside an on-base mark of .500 and slugging percentage of .511. He is a perfect 7-of-7 on stolen base attempts.

SETTING THE TABLE
Marshall Toole has thrived has the Terrier lead-off hitter all season, but he is not the only one to thrive when leading off. With an overall batting average of .462 and on-base mark of .582, Toole is doing his job quite well. But when specifically leading off an inning, Toole is even better at setting the table for his fellow hitters. The junior succeeds 50 percent (12-for-24) of the time as a lead-off hitter at getting on base. Three other Terriers are reaching at least 40 percent of the time as lead-off hitters with at least 10 lead-off opportunities this season: Dixon Black (40), Gunnar Johnson (41.7) and Tyler Hare (47.4). In all, Wofford hitters reach base 47.0 percent of the time to lead-off an inning, succeeding 54 times in 115 tries.

ON DECK
The Terriers remain on the road for their first midweek contest in three weeks with a tilt at Georgia. First pitch against the Bulldogs is set for 5:00 p.m. in Athens on Tuesday, March 19. Wofford then returns home that weekend to host The Citadel in the Southern Conference opener.
