Gault earned All-State honors in football while ranking second in the state in scoring as a senior. He played halfback while also handling the kicking duties and served as captain of the 1934 team. After serving in World War II, where he attained the rank of colonel, he had a distinguished career in public education. He organized Wade Hampton High School and served as principal from 1960-66, and later was an area superintendent in Greenville County. He died on May 1, 1985.
