Phil Dickens put Wofford football on the road to success. Prior to his arrival in 1947, Wofford had not fielded a winning team in 15 years. Dickens produced a winner every year at Wofford. His six-year record was 40-16-7. From 1947-50, Dickens’ teams were unbeaten in 24 straight games. His 1949 team had an 11-0 record during the regular season and played Florida State in the Cigar Bowl. During his six years as coach, Wofford lost only five times in 23 games against in-state competition. The single-most memorable achievement during the Dickens era was a 19-14 victory over Auburn in 1950. Dickens left Wofford following the 1952 season, later coaching at Wyoming and Indiana before retiring in 1964.
