Matt Nelson was named Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year for 2003-04, the only Wofford athlete to earn the honor. During his senior season, he had a team-high 167 tackles and three interceptions on the way to being named first-team All-American by the Associated Press and Sports Network. Nelson finished third in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in Division I-AA and was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He earned Wofford Most Valuable Player honors three times and holds school records in tackles (452) and solo tackles (296) with nine interceptions to rank tenth all-time. Nelson, a native of Grove City, Ohio, graduated in 2004.
