P.J. Boatwright was twice the South Carolina Intercollegiate golf champion in the 1940s. He was also Southern Intercollegiate medalist in 1949. After graduation he won the Carolina Open twice and the Carolina Amateur once; he qualified for four U.S. Amateur tournaments and he played in the 1950 United States Open. Boatwright was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976. For many years he served as the executive director of the United States Golf Association.
