Dr. Black was the co-founder of the Wofford Eleven Club, which evolved into the Terrier Club, in 1946. He had the second-longest tenure (1956-61) of any Terrier Club President. Known as “Dr. Sam,” he was a fixture at home games and most road contests while serving as the Terriers' team physician.
He was a past member of the Wofford Board of Trustees and past president of the Wofford Alumni Association. Captain of the Wofford baseball team as a junior and senior, where he played first base and second base. A three-year member of Wofford football and baseball teams.His son, Sam O. Black, Jr. ’41, was also a team physician for Wofford athletics.
